Four more sleeps ’til TEDxStJohns 2015!
The coaching process has been an AMAZING experience…..heaps of gratitude to the dazzling Shauna Lynch [my speaker coach].
I am legally blind (surprise!), which presented some interesting challenges with the rehearsal process. Unlike other speakers, I didn’t rehearse with flash cards or cheat-sheets (can’t read ‘em!), so Shauna and I worked with a speech-to-text program for the editing, and voice recordings for the memorization and rehearsal process. We worked on a few paragraphs at a time, perfected those, and then moved on to the next passage, and so on, until I finally presented the complete talk (for the first time) to a small audience of TEDxStJohns volunteers last week.
I am SO impressed with Shauna’s willingness and ability to adapt to my process, and her confidence that, despite my unusual pathway to the finish line, I was gonna get there on time and on script….and I did. Yay!
Can’t wait til Friday – it’s gonna be a time! Get your tickets here!
Anne Malone is a writer, speaker, and creator who envisions and advocates freedom from disability for people who are blind. Malone’s writing plumbs the depths of history, the classical arts, and popular culture to reveal the origins of deeply buried cultural beliefs about the abilities and characteristics of people who are blind, and the catastrophic consequences these misbeliefs have on blind people around the world. In partnership with her guide dog Cheryl, Malone opens the eyes of the sighted to the complexities of living with blindness in a visual world.
Anne Malone lives in Newfoundland, and is currently writing Blinding, a multimedia, multi-platform work of creative non-fiction.
